Frequently Asked Questions

  • How do we get started?
I am always happy to chat on the phone for fifteen minutes at no cost to see if I might be a good fit for your family. - If it seems like your child needs enrichment, we can get started right away. All my first games and activities will be informal assessments that will give me a better idea of what kind of support your child may need. - If your child has a diagnosed or suspected learning challenge, I would love to do a more involved fact-finding mission. This could include talking with you and your child about their experiences as a learner, conducting assessments, reading previous assessments, as well as talking to any past education professionals that can help me best support your child.
  • Can you work with my child during the day at their school?
I would absolutely love to! The schools I taught for in Marin had independent learning specialists that worked with students on picnic tables and in quiet spots in the library. This arrangement can be beneficial for many students because it doesn't extend their learning day. Although I am a big fan of electives like a foreign language and music, for some students that time can be better spent bolstering their core academic skills. I have reached out to some of the schools in North Tahoe and heard that they are open to this arrangement, but they first want to hear from the parents in their community. I am very excited about this happening at multiple independent schools in the North Tahoe area.
  • Do you offer financial assistance?
After investing my time and money into two master's degrees in education and my years as a classroom teacher, I am working hard to advocate for myself to earn a fair income. That said, I absolutely hope to work with lower-income families. Please reach out if you would like to hear more about my sliding scale.
  • Do you work with students like my child?
I have the most experience working with: - students in kindergarten through fifth grade. - children who need extra support or need more challenge than they are getting at school. - learners with reading, math, writing, and executive functioning challenges. - students who could use help feeling and expressing their emotions and navigating social situations well.
  • How long do you work with students?
Sessions - I work with students for between one and two hours on average. I find that one and half hours is a sweet spot for many students. Students are often able to sustain their attention because of body breaks and a variety of activities that I weave through each session. Sessions Per Week - Research finds that frequent exposure to a learning task is crucial to creating lasting learning. With this in mind, I recommend at least two sessions a week. Over Time - Every child is different in their response to working with a learning specialist. I think two months is a good time to assess whether the work we are doing together is helping. I have found that the longer I work with a student, the more I am able to hone in on their strengths and use those to help them compensate for other aspects of learning that are more challenging for them.
